Long time no blog. Hope you are all doing well.<br /><br />I have found lots of amazing people through the Internet over the years, from the Livejournal blogs I read back in 2000 to all of the blogs I read and love today. [That means YOU!] I recently discovered Blogtv.com and after viewing a few live video feeds I was unimpressed. I viewed one more Blogtv channel before writing it off as a total waste of time, and I am glad I did.<br /><br />That is how I met <a href="http://www.blogtv.com/People/MorganDonor">Morgan McNally</a>. (Well, Inter-met, anyway.)<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqpR7ihGVPcAm-J8A-k8E3sRpN3F8UKa_r621OZHw82j_maS0xuM-om1C6eGr1j3zbx7e0d0rqF4yCy6cxG8jbgw_G_goCkSsDnYu6GlAAZe731nskH2q46nEVJtEY17k_8amvFkbn1WQ/s1600/McNallyferriswheel.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 426px; height: 134px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqpR7ihGVPcAm-J8A-k8E3sRpN3F8UKa_r621OZHw82j_maS0xuM-om1C6eGr1j3zbx7e0d0rqF4yCy6cxG8jbgw_G_goCkSsDnYu6GlAAZe731nskH2q46nEVJtEY17k_8amvFkbn1WQ/s400/McNallyferriswheel.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5536242682865446626" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:78%;">by Morgan McNally</span><br /></div><span style="font-size:85%;"><br /><br /></span></div><a href="http://blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com/jackalope/2010/09/5_morgan_mcnally.php">Morgan is a talented artist.</a> More than that she really is a sweetheart and I know that you will think so, too. I wanted to share some projects that she is working on.<br /><br />The first is called <a href="http://tosaythankyou.blogspot.com/2010/11/thousandforathousand.html">thousandforathousand</a>. She is creating a thousand paintings, and you can "buy" one simply by doing a good deed of your choice. It can be a big or small thing, and you don't have to "prove" you did it. (But why not blog about it if you do?) She is doing this "to say thank you for being a good person." I have already signed up to be part of this and will update with a post when I choose what good deed I am doing. (Art for doing something good for my fellow man? Win-win!)<br /><br />If you want to be part of this project simply email her at saynomorgan[at]gmail[dot]com with thousandforathousand as the subject.<br /><br />The other project is called Take a Fear, Leave a Fear. If you sign up for this Morgan will send you a package in the mail containing the materials you'll need to set up a Take a Fear, Leave a Fear post somewhere in your town. <a href="http://tosaythankyou.blogspot.com/">From her blog (which you should all go follow!):</a><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;"></span><blockquote><span style="font-weight: bold;">The Goal</span><br />The audience (i.e. strangers and passers-by) can write a fear, a worry, a regret, fold it up and put it in the bowl. Once you put your worry in the bowl, it's not yours anymore. You're giving it up and letting it go. You're acknowledging it and accepting that it's not yours to fret anymore. If you choose to take a fear/worry/regret OUT of the bowl, you get a valuable opportunity to learn about a complete stranger and what makes them tick/keeps them from ticking. It's a chance to gain a little empathy for your fellow human.</blockquote>I really like this idea. Also, Morgan is attempting all these projects out of her own pocket. They mean a lot to her and I am sure she will see them through. If you can help by spreading the word through your blog or Twitter she would appreciate it. I hope some of you will go look at her blog and be part of these projects, or at least pass on the info!<br /><br />(And if anyone knows how to make blog buttons for these projects and would want to do so, please do. I am no good at them. At all.)<div class="blogger-post-footer"><p><a href="http://fusion.google.com/add?feedurl=http://feeds.feedburner.com/LittleWeloosMom"><img src="http://buttons.googlesyndication.com/fusion/add.gif" width="104" height="17" style="border:0" alt="Add to Google Reader or Homepage"/></a></p></div>*mary*http://www.blogger.com/profile/18441748358984280917noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1878073731802666898.post-52892608092672321232010-09-05T01:15:00.001-04:002010-09-05T01:15:39.508-04:00What is the best book you have ever read?<p class="formspringmeText">What is the best book you have ever read?</p><p class="formspringmeFooter"> Answer <a href="http://4ms.me/cEvYYv">here</a></p><div class="blogger-post-footer"><p><a href="http://fusion.google.com/add?feedurl=http://feeds.feedburner.com/LittleWeloosMom"><img src="http://buttons.googlesyndication.com/fusion/add.gif" width="104" height="17" style="border:0" alt="Add to Google Reader or Homepage"/></a></p></div>*mary*http://www.blogger.com/profile/18441748358984280917noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1878073731802666898.post-55689440476447396612010-08-24T13:10:00.002-04:002010-08-24T13:23:19.889-04:00In Case You Haven't Noticed...I am taking a little hiatus from writing this ol' web log. I chose to take a summer class that seriously drained my time and energy. I wish I hadn't taken it. I got an A, barely, but it really made me feel unprepared for fall classes, which started yesterday. I'm not sure what is going on with me but I have been feeling anxious, depressed and overwhelmed. My insomnia has become sort of ridiculous. I am going to focus on doing well in school and spending time with Violet. I really don''t want her to pick up on my anxiety but that has been a struggle. I really can't pinpoint what is causing all these feelings so I am considering a doctor visit to get a medical opinion. I really do not like feeling this way.<br /><br />So, until I can get some blogging mojo back into my life I will be around, lurking your blogs when I have the time to do so.<br /><br />Love you Bloggers,<br />Mary<br /><br /><br />PS- I hope the sketchbook is still in circulation. Look forward to seeing it. Anyone have it recently?<div class="blogger-post-footer"><p><a href="http://fusion.google.com/add?feedurl=http://feeds.feedburner.com/LittleWeloosMom"><img src="http://buttons.googlesyndication.com/fusion/add.gif" width="104" height="17" style="border:0" alt="Add to Google Reader or Homepage"/></a></p></div>*mary*http://www.blogger.com/profile/18441748358984280917noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1878073731802666898.post-86864088993987206462010-07-12T18:01:00.006-04:002010-07-12T23:46:07.463-04:00I Can Has Capshun Plz<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgs11pMGAyw0q98p9TkeEQP6gWURhZDBr6YA2y3ZzyhgFHChuY-56_Am5EjohjhZxZmpe8neq1eU5R__ip9YNl8nm20hNsBCMXnuWZbO-E7qRteFHBoiyX4NBcDk9kwGSWqbknopHFTdCs/s1600/Photo0016.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgs11pMGAyw0q98p9TkeEQP6gWURhZDBr6YA2y3ZzyhgFHChuY-56_Am5EjohjhZxZmpe8neq1eU5R__ip9YNl8nm20hNsBCMXnuWZbO-E7qRteFHBoiyX4NBcDk9kwGSWqbknopHFTdCs/s400/Photo0016.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5493231939718107570" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXpBV22epRDTUigwNW_iKo3Jiar0fUZA9WrWVdKcpLz1yF6QQLZ98WlFdW9OHwvGr40jpDFYWU3Y3wznshyLeT889_o0TWmuZdUVnRIX9N0J2LB28_d7YZR2EZpg57BSPXLatkKDeChiU/s1600/Photo0016.jpg"><br /></a><br /><br />This is a picture of the brother and sister kitties from several years ago. He is only about six weeks old and was very underfed. I picked him up and he started purring right away (Come on, you didn't think I meant a human child, <i>did you</i>?) His right eye was pretty beat up, but worse than that a moment later I made the nauseating discovery that he was the host to a Warble fly's worm. I won't go into anymore detail than that. If you didn't grow up in the country <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warble_fly">you can read about it here</a>. </div><div><br /></div><div>When Jeremy came home I showed him the kitty and we started calling around to veterinary offices on the off-chance someone could help us on the Saturday before Fourth of July. After waiting a while we decided that Jeremy would make the trek to the emergency animal clinic an hour and a half away. It's $78 to get in the door, but they are always open. He spent hours driving him there and then sitting and waiting. The kitty needed antibiotics for a respiratory infection and its eye, and also to heal the Warble fly wound. </div><div><br /></div><div>The good news is that kitty seems to be doing well and should be fine. $168 later, that is. But how could we leave the poor little fella out there to die? We couldn't. And luckily we have CareCredit, so we charged the visit. </div><div><br /></div><div>Meet Will Feral (Though Violet has named him Luchee-Lee for some reason, haha.):</div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLdB2c6vBOwQtOi7OudiSiACOAd5Fz9dePju9S5n62rLGSRTaZkG7R_m4K0M2divQFNXdeFpPsmIp53iLKPSVcxyRRehWEybMQG8W_sbbwFoRIwEYaiLrGWLua1xI7M7BlyrtTv5vAs5I/s400/IMG_8024.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5490186394052217522" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px; " /></span><div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#0000EE;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#0000EE;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#0000EE;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5JHWl9fuuA_cCmykNObICoy6hUyRg1XlExWa_9guCCGNaAUFXb8vpFYCnBMNC4yJDEXitZxsxFXIHyRmEYT_RDhLnUT2xCmHryeeGdpshadkVFed2nfvnMzMNpWX5ik0AeC93a0_5BDE/s400/IMG_8023.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5490186378058912674" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px; " /></span></span></div><div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#9999FF;">Perhaps you remember the last orphan we took in. I know. Pathetic. BUT, while I was there I did screen grab these two ads to share with you!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">First we have this ad which urges moms to go back to school. Naturally the photo for such an ad is... this bearded dude's mugshot. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhb3vzzMo8N3e8HLfjGlY-I37GxjvUPpqKqhJ4qps6sYyyqsYtdx535DEvf3DXi9WXLyFoDFo-DOVov4USUpuQK5RFYvSkXkSDJgqS2zK7aNwcFKSxhH8HnXgzXIhVfDD_oW25jEAq4z38/s1600/FAILcow.jpg"></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlC9GSGpNa0RmV_wFafq76eyFzVafEH9UVezpKgwVW6xBNn2OppfQbEzHrTJLRG2RS9qBAwk7StKNV74UsP0vUPxgFqiPN-q4DoWF8LYYw8OrJZS2hlsCrAItt8X9DoEG2ptVg5JehDz0/s1600/AdFAIL.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 335px; height: 276px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlC9GSGpNa0RmV_wFafq76eyFzVafEH9UVezpKgwVW6xBNn2OppfQbEzHrTJLRG2RS9qBAwk7StKNV74UsP0vUPxgFqiPN-q4DoWF8LYYw8OrJZS2hlsCrAItt8X9DoEG2ptVg5JehDz0/s400/AdFAIL.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5483900280379320914" /></a><br /><div>Next we have another back to school ad. This one says "Too busy to go back to school?" Well, look at this fella. Yes, he has been busy! With a mustachioed sneer like that, <b>and</b> that killer sense of style, there is no doubt that this guy spends his days going on callbacks for roles in blaxploitation flicks. Invariably, he is cast as the jive-talking snitch who really has a heart of gold once you get to know him. </div><div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU7d2sGOyggkOVRZb2P6D8BC2zPVpDKsi4jAewGK0athnFsS-oRcb708aOC-B4m5-bpb_V_83X0jiGujkmdEB3p9GJzHyX0i6-Bi4zsfpMkgt3kWDcMYUQ89o-P61ezNWRXLk6CgjJUSU/s1600/huggybear.jpg"><img style="display:block; The prize was four <a href="http://www.sweetlibertine.com/">Sweet Libertine</a> mineral eyeshadows, so I entered on a whim.<div><br /></div><div>The Makeup Theory site is written by Todra Payne. The header says "Empowering Every Woman to be Beautiful," which I like. I looked through quite a bit of the blog and really enjoyed it. There is much more to it than just makeup. The stories she tells are interesting and I love that she appreciates "quirky beauty". <div><div><br /></div><div>From her blog:<div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div><blockquote> <span class="Apple-style-span" style=" color: rgb(128, 128, 128); font-family:verdana, Arial, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;">I like offbeat, quirky faces. Strong jaw lines, interesting hair textures, something international in its appeal. </span></span></blockquote><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" color: rgb(128, 128, 128); font-family:verdana, Arial, sans-serif;font-size:13px;"></span></div><div>Sweet Libertine Cosmetics started out as a little shop on Etsy ran by Sarah Waller from her apartment. Demand was so great that she recently had to get a new workspace to fill the orders. I knew about the shop because musician <a href="http://blog.amandapalmer.net/">Amanda Palmer</a> had mentioned it at one time (and SLC even makes Amanda Palmer-inspired eyeshadows). I really like the entrepreneurial spirit of Sarah at Sweet Libertine. I'm glad she's doing well.<div><br /></div><div>I was sort of a tomboy growing up and really have only begun experimenting with makeup as an adult. Eyeshadows are the most fun to play with for me, so I was very excited to click over to the Makeup Theory Workshops site today and see that <b>Little Weloos Mom</b> was the winner! For once, I won something! Hooray! </div><div><br /></div><div>[We all remember the horrible disappointment I felt after losing <a href="http://domestica79.blogspot.com/">Michelle's</a> awesome sock zombie contest. She's hilarious, so I forgive her for not fixing the results in my favor. A <b>m</b><b>uch needed</b> summer break.<div><br /></div><div>Here are some bizarre little anecdotes about <i>moi <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal; ">for your enjoyment. (Unnecessary French? Fancy!) </span></i></div><div><i></i></div><div><br /></div><div><ul><li>I stay up ridiculously late. I rarely get anything productive done when I do this but that hasn't slowed me down yet. And, I would argue that watching a biography of comedy legend Rodney Dangerfield <i>IS</i> productive. (And now I'm arguing with myself. Great.)</li></ul><div><br /></div><ul><li>Sometimes when I am up ridiculously late I go on my front porch to smoke. It is always so dark and quiet, just before the birds have started their racket and decent people are all asleep. As I look around and let my eyes adjust to the dark I always half-expect to see Mothman or Bigfoot walking down the street. At least a zombie.</li></ul><div><br /></div><ul><li>Though I have yet to see any cool monsters around here, I have seen something strange. At least three times now when I am out night-smoking I have witnessed three different dogs just running down the street, each like he were on a mission. Why would a dog be running down the street at 4 a.m. by himself? They each followed the same path. It's weird. One happened just last night. A big white dog, just hauling ass down the street at some godawful hour. I think it is better than seeing Mothman, actually. Definitely funnier.</li></ul><ul><li>I have recurring dreams in which I am escaping from grizzly bears that have inexplicably taken up residence in my childhood home. I am usually holding Violet and jumping from a window to get away from them. Care to interpret?</li></ul><div><br /></div><ul><li>When I was a child our neighbor had a horse that would sometimes get loose. It was tame and would come investigate things by looking in our windows. It scared the hell out of me, though. The wild eyes and huge head peering in the glass (probably at his own reflection). These visits seemed to only occur on days that I had broken an egg while playing around in the kitchen. Bizarre, I know, but my kid-brain correlated the two events. If I broke an egg I would sit around nervously waiting for the horse to come to the window. (What? I was a weird kid. We were poor, so we played with eggs a lot I guess.)</li></ul><div><br /></div><ul><li>I am scared to go to our basement by myself at night. Seriously. In my defense, it is a huge, spooky-ass basement with plenty of clutter for ghosts and monsters to hide behind. </li></ul><div><br /></div><ul><li>I have a phobia of getting bugs tangled into my hair. Locusts, moths, june-bugs, butterflies: any one of these strike fear into my heart if they get too close to my head. </li></ul><div><br /></div><ul><li>Okay, so this list has turned to "Reasons Why I am a Huge Scaredy Cat and Weirdo". Oh well. On I plow.</li></ul><div><br /></div><ul><li>I like tattoos but I am not a fan of getting one just because it is trendy thing to do, or because I need to commemorate the fact that I am a mother (um, that is what stretch marks are for), or any other such reason. I am really glad that I wasn't too impulsive when I was younger. I found a whole bunch of trace paper with bad tattoo designs I drew when I was sixteen. I planned on getting them all. One had two stylized snakes intertwined. I had wanted that one on my spine. Hahaha! It gets better: I had drawn some runes around them, too. No wonder only creepy dudes asked me to prom.</li></ul><div><br /></div><div><br /></div></div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><p><a href="http://fusion.google.com/add?feedurl=http://feeds.feedburner.com/LittleWeloosMom"><img src="http://buttons.googlesyndication.com/fusion/add.gif" width="104" height="17" style="border:0" alt="Add to Google Reader or Homepage"/></a></p></div>*mary*http://www.blogger.com/profile/18441748358984280917noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1878073731802666898.post-40647691062266878522010-04-26T16:14:00.004-04:002010-04-26T16:31:15.778-04:00It's a Sad DayOne of our good friends was killed in a car accident yesterday. He was our age, with a wife and two small children. I met him two years and one week ago, at Violet's first birthday party. He and Jeremy grew up together and reconnected when we moved back here to his hometown. For a time he even lived in this house when they were teenagers. <div><br /></div><div>He was a great guy, always willing to help. He's the person we called when we had any computer issues. He set up the wi-fi I am using right now. Just a few weeks ago he drove Jeremy to pick up the new couch and helped carry it in. Like I said, he was always willing to help a friend. We loved taking Violet out to dinner with him and his family, even though Violet would inevitably become The Screaming Kid in every restaurant. </div><div><br /></div><div>Our friend was so excited because he had recently bought an iPad. I'm glad he didn't wait for second generation model to come out like I told him to. But, that is all incidental. What is tearing my heart out right now is thinking about his wife, as she will have to explain to their two children where there daddy is, and why he isn't coming home. </div><div><br /></div><div>Don't let the mundane tasks of living obscure what is truly important. Tell your family that you love them today. Every day. </div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><p><a href="http://fusion.google.com/add?feedurl=http://feeds.feedburner.com/LittleWeloosMom"><img src="http://buttons.googlesyndication.com/fusion/add.gif" width="104" height="17" style="border:0" alt="Add to Google Reader or Homepage"/></a></p></div>*mary*http://www.blogger.com/profile/18441748358984280917noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1878073731802666898.post-68668559651789524322010-04-25T01:10:00.003-04:002010-04-25T01:36:39.725-04:00Everyday Monsters<div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#0000EE;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="text-decoration: underline;"><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: center;">Beasties around the house.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#0000EE;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="text-decoration: underline;"><br /></span></span></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0ryhi-yR9N-s7bp2kPgGDoZ4_9vQElWBWejW4QChoaT6gE-FjRV7lmaXS_EXZiwgRfQq10pkpuO34CTOcEkVvbE0l7a8p9JJd8eZV01mKwuAkjnPPwCyjXgc5LOl7tBEhLyk0K-1YC0c/s1600/IMG_7371.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0ryhi-yR9N-s7bp2kPgGDoZ4_9vQElWBWejW4QChoaT6gE-FjRV7lmaXS_EXZiwgRfQq10pkpuO34CTOcEkVvbE0l7a8p9JJd8eZV01mKwuAkjnPPwCyjXgc5LOl7tBEhLyk0K-1YC0c/s400/IMG_7371.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5463940285452424130" /></a><div style="text-align: center;">Sidewalk Chalk Beast drawn by a friend.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBSZBu6wdBxKfkth1hNBzDFNZtDOMRf7SeSwGVw1l3tHiE1OYbxB8W4T2g_Nn5LewRVZssrhzVKGf8AnSge5hgiF3WnBgFXODQJkYUQ_Oqw_y42fnP_kp9ZG9TGa4kaAbjy9zXRhJthRo/s1600/IMG_7370.JPG" style="text-decoration: none;"><img style="text-decoration: underline;display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px; " src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBSZBu6wdBxKfkth1hNBzDFNZtDOMRf7SeSwGVw1l3tHiE1OYbxB8W4T2g_Nn5LewRVZssrhzVKGf8AnSge5hgiF3WnBgFXODQJkYUQ_Oqw_y42fnP_kp9ZG9TGa4kaAbjy9zXRhJthRo/s400/IMG_7370.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5463940282820456610" /></a><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div><div style="text-align: center;">Close up of chalk beast.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRqHogJCIPvkCUrptI7MPkD5dUg6kPb1694l04LQPmUnoxXI3UMKBTN7nQ6iHjxwKWTLxqE2uKNFGmWaEaD_yCw_vxBH7w_ebQfL9kTsfFnLomW588wSwp5LVCivx3O8Xs4e0fXTPSaf8/s1600/IMG_7420.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRqHogJCIPvkCUrptI7MPkD5dUg6kPb1694l04LQPmUnoxXI3UMKBTN7nQ6iHjxwKWTLxqE2uKNFGmWaEaD_yCw_vxBH7w_ebQfL9kTsfFnLomW588wSwp5LVCivx3O8Xs4e0fXTPSaf8/s400/IMG_7420.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5463940273369954594" /></a><div style="text-align: center;">Brobee from Yo Gabba Gabba, with Violet's sunglasses on. It's become an American roadside attraction but was originally just a bizarre house that a man named Alex Jordan built on a sixty-foot rock in the 1940s. He kept adding to it, each room featuring plenty of bizarre things to look at. It is in Wisconsin, which means I will only have to travel through three states to get there. <i>Only</i> three states, I say, as though it won't seem like all fifty with my very energetic toddler in the backseat trying to burst through her car seat's five-point harness.</div><div><br /></div><div>But today I found a great reason to go ahead and plan this trip. <a href="http://www.neilgaiman.com/">Neil Gaiman</a>, one of my favorite authors (Sandman, Anansi Boys, Coraline) announced that he will be having a weekend there, to celebrate the fact that his book American Gods has scenes based there. (The indoor carousel that leads to the netherworld, in case you haven't read the book. Not just any carousel, but the World's Largest!) Lets' see. Neil Gaiman, The House on the Rock, the two days before Halloween: perfection. How can I miss it? I hope I don't! I have to start planning now. </div><div><br /></div><div>Here are some photos I found around the Web to give you an idea of what this strange place is like.</div><div><br /></div><div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0u6lNV3yeLhs6FtC00CA8wGvvtAjEhjSpboLVlGmM4qs_eB9TcQ7JeWhfP3Yfhke9soaRH2ybzaogov9znxD-E0ZTqRi48BCalj7Zu3TDhHnJqJAgP_u2wwQ-yr22nQaw-0GxE8KDinc/s1600/organ_room_3_fs.jpg"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0u6lNV3yeLhs6FtC00CA8wGvvtAjEhjSpboLVlGmM4qs_eB9TcQ7JeWhfP3Yfhke9soaRH2ybzaogov9znxD-E0ZTqRi48BCalj7Zu3TDhHnJqJAgP_u2wwQ-yr22nQaw-0GxE8KDinc/s400/organ_room_3_fs.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5456763167145526994" style="display: block; Compared to what I've gleaned from speaking to people who've grown up here the web site makes it sound much nicer. The fact that an "Industrial School for Colored Boys" even existed in a town that even today remains largely a white population seems strange. <div><br /></div><div>One woman I know informed me that her mother worked at the Industrial School in the 1960s and '70s. She said that at one time one of the buildings was used as a "Syphilis House," in which people from other parts of the country afflicted with the disease were sent there to be quarantined. I can't find any record of that online, but I'm not surprised. </div><div><br /></div><div>I had two people I go to school with mention to me that Walter Freeman, father of the "ice-pick lobotomy" and subject of the <a href="http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/5Ix29w/www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3D_0aNILW6ILk">PBS documentary The Lobotomist,</a> spent some time working there. Scary. </div><div><br /></div><div>I won't be getting any pictures of the creepy old buildings. It turns out they they were demolished just a couple of years ago.
